Exploring the being of knowing

Is it real, or is it just words?

What ever you opinion or belief, the basic feature of your opinions is based is a reality of words, and the fact is, words have something to do with reality.

The question of “who is right?” finds more problem than solution, especially for mental health.

mental health philosophy

Dr. Marshal Rosenburg is known for developing and promoting a manner of being called Nonviolent Communication.

While his method is useful and helpful for dealing with mental issues and political conflicts, his basic idea is that the basis of all conflict is due to two things:

  • an incorrect manner of understanding of what is actually going on.
  • an ineffective manner of using words.

These two aspects of one’s experience contribute to an increase possibility that violence will occur both intra-personally an interpersonally, and a decreased possibility of meeting the needs of the parties involved, you and other people involved.

But we have to begin where the issue is occurring, which in mental health is indeed the person with the issue.

I feel that he was onto something very significant because when we begin to engage with our own experience in a curious manner, being interested in what is actually happening we find that we are using words in our encounter with reality.

Am I having a mental issue, or am I just thinking I have a mental issue?

Here is where we are challenged to think about what is happening. However, often part of experiencing mental issue is that “I don’t really want to think about it, I just want it fixed”.

Even as I write this, this issue is so ubiquitous to understanding mental health and mental issue, that many people would see this kind of calling out as very uncaring and dense, not considerate of the person who is experiencing the issue. This is because (as we therapists might say) it sounds like an accusation that the person suffering is wrong.

….But that assessment (that it is an accusation) is incorrect. This calls for a return to what is happening.

This is because it is not about any theory of the way people should be, rather, it is about the person themselves outside, before, or beyond the theory.

So it is why I say:

all mental health interventions concern the reality of words.

We think words.

Try thinking about something without words.

How else could we be talking about things if this were not the case?

And here we are!

here is the statement that now days is drastically misinterpreted, the problem at the heart of the question between reality and words:

There is no difference AND

The difference forms the basis of the problem.

This kind of knowledge is empowering.

It shows us the irony involved in the political-social-ideological issue, and why I say that mental issues are not entirely subject to reality and its arguments even though most people would say they are intimately involved.

Mental Health Philosophy empowers people to their own mental health. As well, it contextualizes every intervention that is currently being used in every therapeutic session for what is happening and what you (the person asking first help and the counselor) are wanting.

About this blog

Essays in mental health philosophy—less “tips,” more why things work (or don’t). I look at the first principles under therapy, psychiatry, psychology, and everyday life, and occasionally share notes from papers and books-in-progress.

This space stands alongside—not inside—my counseling practice. If you’re seeking therapy in Colorado, there’s a link in the footer.
